Seven years of National Party Government has ground the Manawatu-Whanganui region to a halt says Palmerston North MP Iain Lees-Galloway.
“Statistics released today show that our region grew just 0.7% in the year to March 2015. That anaemic growth compares with 6.9% in Auckland. Over the last 5 years our growth rate has been barely half the national rate.
“The situation is dire. No amount of studies is going to get our region back on track. We need the Government to roll its sleeves up and get regional New Zealand working again.
“Government needs to do a lot more to attract private investment into the regions. Simply sitting on the sidelines and hoping for the best is not enough.
“We also need to consider the role the public sector can play. Not every public sector head office needs to be based in Wellington. Palmerston North would be an excellent place to locate one or two Government agencies.
“We need a Government with ideas. We need a game-changer. Whatever you say about National it has never been the party of ideas. That is Labour’s job. Right now, our region urgently needs a Labour Government,” says Iain Lees-Galloway.
